    Tomd Sweeping Festival

    Tomd Sweeping Festival
I wonder what made them do that?
I don't believe that some grandchildren will know like to remember their ancestors. They are too young to know it. Most of them go there because of pressure from their parents. And I believe some of the parents will tell their childern that if they don't go there, they won't have any blessing from grandparents and grand grand parents. So that is why they went there!
This tradition has been passed on to us since long time ago. However, sometimes  I feel that lots of people do this avtivity without real purpose, and sometimes they even wonder why they have to do this.
It is just a way to express our missing them.

It is a tradition that has been pass on to us from generation to generation. In addition to cleaning our ancestors' tombs and getting to know more about our family background, the day has provided a way to get together with our family. It's something like culture and very meaningful. Don't you think so ?

A child’s first lesson in life is probably to obey.

A person who looks forward to posterity looks backward to their ancestors.  If a person takes no pride in the noble achievements of his 'remote' ancestors, he'll never achieve anything worthy to be remembered with pride by his 'remote' descendants.

Some people realized the scarcity of land and their descendants' potential lack of interest in this tradition and chose to scatter their ashes in the ocean or the woods. It's better to do something valuable for others to remember than leave a burden to the posterity.

I am not against this tradition. We have to find something better to replace the old tradition before we give it up.

Both Viceroy and Lastpeanut have got good points on the matter. They look at it from different point of view. One is more concern about the spiritual value, while the other is more flexible and practical. I agreed with them. We do the way we like but the culture is really worth passing on to the next generation. You can deal with the past by buring or cremating. But you can not criticize others for the way they follow the tradition or view the special day. There is nothing right or wrong.

The respect you pay for people when they are alive is much more important than the ritual you go through when they are dead.

This is the culture from Chinese. Does anyone would like to explore what reason we should sweep the tomb?
