上週線上英文輔導時，有位網友問我考試寫作的問題，並附上他寫的一段：

In my opinion, the government should build a community only for the elderly who cannot live on their own. In the meantime, nurses and volunteers trained professionally must be there for emergency.

這樣寫，文法上不是問題，但句子連貫部份，可以在加強。這段裡的第二句其實是說明第一句提到的 ”community”，所以，這兩句可以合成一句：

In my opinion, the government should develop a community with medical facilities and trained staff for the elderly who cannot live on their own.

問題在於”in the meantime”的使用，當兩種不同的情況或任務必須兼顧時，才用這個片語，例如：

In my opinion, the government should develop a community with medical facilities and trained staff for the elderly who cannot live on their own. In the meantime, senior citizens should be made aware of the importance of fitness exercise to the quality of their retired life.

這兩種情況以不同顏色字顯示，可以感受 ”in the meantime” 的連貫功能吧! 許多英文連接詞的使用時機和意思表達的完整是英文寫作的難處，但是可以改善。
